My dear Knox
Gustave Bertrand of the French secret services, has
just given us documents concerning the Enigma
machine (The encryption manual and a long
encrypted message with plaintext matches as well
as the key). I hope that thanks to them you will be
able to reconstitute the wiring of its rotors. I do
not give you the plaintext of the fifth part of the
message. I also ask you to decipher it. This will be
proof that you master the Enigma.

12. A message
to encode at 10 35 reads:
"Morgen um zehn Uhr, um das
feindliche Fort anzugreifen. Um acht Uhr wird
die Artillerie das Fort bombardieren. Die Angriffswellen der Infanteristen
werden jede Stunde gesendet."
Since
"ch" must be replaced by "q", "ä" by
"ae", etc., and punctuation, if
necessary, by "x", the sentence is encoded as follows:
"morgen um zehn uhr x um das
feindliche fort anzugreifen x um acht uhr wird
die artillerie das fort bombardieren x die angriffswellen der infanteristen
werden jede stunde gesendet x"
13. The sender
chooses the message key 01 02 12. The numbers correspond to the
letters a b l on the connector board. They are keyed twice in succession
according to III, 10 with the basic position 06 15 12, whereby the letters X P
J
M W J result.
These are written down in the following form, as the coded spell to be
transmitted in five-digit groups immediately appeals, in the following form:

plaintext to be encrypted after setting the award key 01 02 12 is
keyed. The letters that light up are written behind the previously obtained
6 letters. The 4 first letters are combined with the last of the 6 letters (i)
mentioned in IV, 13 to form the second five-digit letter group and the rest
are also divided into groups of 5
