Enigma procedure (1943)

Abandonment of the kenngruppe

At the end of 1943, an important change occurred in the Enigma procedures: the abandonment of discriminants (the kenngruppen). This change took place on September 1 for the army and on November 1 for the air force.

How could an operator choose the encryption key? I suppose it was based on call-signs (a similar change took place among the Americans with the M-209 in the following months). Each unit belonging to the same Enigma network was identified by its radio call sign. If the unit belonged to more than one Enigma network, it was identified by more than one call sign.

There is no document to say whether this procedural change corresponded to the edition of a new manual or to the correction of the 1940 manual.

This change greatly complicated the work of Hut 6 in BP. The new procedure slows down the processing of messages enormously. To cope with this, Hut 6 had to increase the staff of the Registration Room (RR) from 220 to 300 people. Likewise the Y stations had to give more information to the RR to help them discern the different networks.
